Well Closures

IWPS has deactivated countless wells throughout BC including artesian flowing wells.

According to the BC groundwater protection act a well that has not been used for 5 years, or has not been maintained for future use, becomes “abandoned” and must be deactivated or closed.

Deactivating a well prevents:

Surface contamination from reaching aquifers.
Different water quality aquifers contaminating one another.

Steps include:

All pumping equipment will be removed from the well and a mixture of grout, cement, sand, or bentonite will be pumped into the well from the bottom up sealing the aquifer from any surface contaminants. Then the casing will be cut off at least 0.5m below ground level and a clay mound will be compacted on top of the casing.
